Recycled Wrappings

April 22, 2012

After church I had a bridal shower to go to. I was so proud of myself for remembering to go by Target and get one of the gifts that my former intern and her fiancée requested on their registry. I just forgot to get wrapping paper. I wracked my brain to think of a creative way to wrap the gift acceptably. I had no white paper. I had no gift bags large enough for the stainless steel scale I had purchased. I pondered the dilemma all night long. It affected my dreams. Finally I awoke this morning with a plan. I was not going to stop by Wal-Mart or anywhere else to pay $5 or more for wrapping paper that is going to be immediately ripped off and discarded. I knew I had some leftover newsprint, the colorful advertising pages. I decided to use that. I made the bow out of newsprint, too. Scales are easy to wrap neatly. I still felt guilty for my audacity at taking such a common, informally wrapped gift to the shower, so I had to do something to make it acceptable. I made a card that said:
"Dear Monica and Jeremy,
May God's blessings on your life together be as abundant as the need for recycling in the U.S.A. May the weight of your love for one another exceed the tonnage of the Appalachian Mountain Range. May laughter ring in your home as clearly as sleigh bells at Christmas!
Joy, joy, joy!
Jama
